Nepal Langtang Valley Trek
Return to Central Nepal treks
9 days trek
The Langtang Valley Trek offers an opportunity to explore villages, to climb small peaks and to visit glaciers at a comfortably low elevation. Because there are good opportunities for moderate climbing excursions here, allow an extra day for exploration of the extensive glacier system. The Langtang valley trek is very easily accessed and can be reached from Kathmandu.
Day 1 Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (O/nt Altitude 1,460m/8 hrs approx). Morning departures from Kathmandu. The road heads north-westward through Balaju before climbing steadily to the rim of the Kathmandu Valley. Weather permitting views of the Manaslu massif, Ganesh, Langtang and Jugal Himal are possible on the winding descent down from the Valley ridge-top. The current road conditions to Dhunche (50 kms) are rigorous to say the least. It’s another 15 kms to Syabrubesi for overnight.
Day 2 To Lama Hotel (O/nt Altitude 2,480m/6/7 hrs approx. total time) Set off trekking from Syabrubesi. The trail first descends then turns northwards, passing through woods, sometimes filled with monkeys. We arrive at the village of Doman. A steep climb over a rocky ridge brings us to a junction with the trail from Thulo Syabru. The region is deciduous, rich in birdlife and home to the extremely elusive red panda. A long climb through more forest brings us to another junction and beyond the gradient eases as we near Langtang Khola. Crossing the Langtang Khola the trail once more climbs through a wooded area and past waterfalls before finally reaching the Lama Hotel.
Day 3 To Langtang Village (O/nt Altitude 3,430m/6hrs approx.) It’s upwards and upwards, following the Langtang Khola, climbing to Ghora Tabela (2,970m) from where Langtang Lirung should be visible. After the village of Thangshep the valley opens out and at times some pleasant level sections give some respite to the hard climb. We eventually reach the Tibetan-like village of Langtang.
Day 4 To kyanjin Gompa (O/nt Altitude 3,850m/ hrs approx.) On leaving Langtant the trail crosses yak pastures and follows a meandering stream. Gangchhempo (6,387m) is a prominent landmark off to the east. The trail reaches the Tamang settlement of Mundu (3,410m) and Sindum (3,410m). We continue our climb Kyanjin Gompa, flanked by equally spectacular peaks, notable the Langtang range and Langshisa, comes into view. We reach our night stop – the village of Kyanjin Gompa. Time permitting, there's one-hour uphill hike to the Langtang Lirung Glacier. Alternatively, explore Kyanjin Gompa.
Day 5 Kyanjin Gompa (O/nt Altitude 3,850m. The day is spent climbing one or two peaks, Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) and Tsergo Ri (4,984m), which give excellent views of surrounding peaks.
Day 6 Trek back to Lama Hotel (O/nt Altitude 2,470m/6 hrs approx.). We retrace our steps to Lama Hotel.
Day 7 To Thulo Syabru (O/nt Altitude 2,130m/ 6 hrs approx.). Again we take a relatively familiar rout, through woods and along the river valley passing Bamboo Lodge, where we join the uphill trail heading to the Sherpa Village of Thulo Syabru.
Day 8 To Dhunche (O/nt Altitude 1,950m/ 4-5 hrs approx.).
Day 9: Dhunche – Kathmandu (4-5 hrs drive to Kathmandu)
